Northern Tanzania Safari Parks
Northern Tanzania's "Northern Safari Circuit" is home to some of the world's most famous and diverse wildlife parks
The major parks include Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park.
Serengeti National Park
Known as the "Glory of Tanzania," the Serengeti is famous for the Great Migration, one of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth, which involves over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra.
Key features: Endless grasslands, a high concentration of predators, and diverse landscapes.
Best for: Experiencing the Great Migration (timing varies), witnessing predators in action, and hot air balloon safaris.
Best time to visit: Wildlife viewing is great year-round, but the Great Migration is the biggest highlight.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
This UNESCO World Heritage site is centered around the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera. The crater floor is a "Garden of Eden" with a dense and diverse population of wildlife.
Key features: High concentration of wildlife, including the "Big Five," and year-round game viewing. It is also home to the Maasai people, who coexist with the wildlife.
Best for: Reliable Big Five sightings, spectacular scenery, and cultural visits to Maasai villages.
Best time to visit: Good wildlife viewing is available all year.
Tarangire National Park
Often called the "Elephant Kingdom," this park is known for its massive elephant herds and iconic baobab trees.
Key features: Diverse landscape with river valleys and swamps that sustain a rich variety of wildlife.
Best for: Exceptional elephant viewing, walking safaris, and excellent birdwatching.
Best time to visit: The dry season (June to October) is best for game viewing, as animals congregate around the Tarangire River.
Lake Manyara National Park
This park is a scenic gem at the base of the Great Rift Valley, with a diverse range of habitats.
Key features: Famous for its tree-climbing lions, large troops of baboons, and a massive soda lake that attracts thousands of flamingos.
Best for: Unique wildlife viewing, particularly the tree-climbing lions, and excellent birdwatching.
Best time to visit: Wildlife viewing is great year-round, but the dry season (June to October) is ideal.
